Hallucinogenic alkaloid snuffing in South America and Northern Chile

The main sources of hallucinogenic substances snuffed in South America which have been identified to date are the trees, Anadenanthera spp. (Fabaceae, tryptamines) and Virola spp. (Myristicaceae, tryptamines), the vine Banisteriopsis spp. (Malpighiaceae, ß-carbolines), the bush Psychotria spp. (Rubiaceae, tryptamines) and the cactus Lophophora sp. (Cactaceae, phenylethylamines) (Torres et al., 1991). None of these sources are native to northern Chile.l.
